Records of the Chesnut Grove Baptist Church[manuscript], 1773-1970.

Records, 1773-1778, 1792-1811, include minutes and list of white and African-American members, kept by George Twyman; minutes pertaining to funerals, baptisms, and cases of excommunication, for which some of the reasons given are disorderly conduct, intoxication, adultery, disobedience, and running away from masters; and a fragment of the church constitution. Minute books, 1855-1921, of the Chesnut Grove Baptist Church, Albemarle County, Va., concern recording of members present at meetings, determination of delegates sent to the Albemarle Association meetings; Civil War period entries record deaths of Confederate soldiers and the flight of slaves. The books also include entries, 1866, concerning the membership's opposition to the establishment of a Sunday School for the benefit of the African-American members, followed by later entries concerning the combined application of African-American members to leave the church in good standing to establish their own church, and 1903 entries pertaining to the laying out of a new cemetery. Statements of financial resources are regularly recorded, pertaining to the maintenance and repair of the church, construction of a new church building, and home, state, and foreign mission contributions. In addition there are four volumes, 1921-1970, of church minutes.
